The Awakening Retreat Center offers a labyrinth set in the center of a landscaped setting overlooking Mt. Diablo. Constructed of thousands of hand-laid bricks, this particular design is patterned after the octagonal labyrinth located at the Amiens Cathedral in France. Used for walking meditation, labyrinths are ancient sacred patterns whose usefulness in spiritual practice has been recently rediscovered around the globe in many of the world's great spiritual traditions.
The design of the labyrinth symbolizes our inner journey as we move through life seeking the center or core of our being. By retracing this pattern while walking, we are better able to let go of our daily concerns and suspend our sense of linear time, thereby helping us to connect with our spiritual essence or source.
